If you have one or more missing teeth, you know the effect it can have on your self-confidence. Losing a tooth changes the way your smile looks, and it also changes the way you feel about your appearance. But lost teeth have more than cosmetic consequences. Even one missing tooth can alter the way you eat, and over time, that uneven bite balance can wind up increasing your risks for tooth decay and gum disease, along with a painful jaw condition called temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJ. While dental implants can be a great choice for many patients with one or more missing teeth, they’re not always the best choice for every patient. Sometimes, dentures are a better alternative. If that’s the case, Dr. Michael Rice can fit you with a denture that’s comfortable, functional and beautiful, too.

Not Your Grandparents’ Dentures

There was a time when dentures were known for being uncomfortable and difficult to care for. But thanks to major advances in technology, all that has changed. At our Oakmont practice, we use dentures crafted from lightweight, state-of-the-art materials for a fit that’s comfortable and secure. Plus, today’s dentures are designed to conform to the contours of your mouth, which means they fit more securely so the risks of slippage and painful sore spots are reduced. More translucent materials result in dentures that look more natural — like your own teeth — so you won’t feel self-conscious about wearing them.

At Oakmont General & Implant Dentistry, we offer three types of dentures:

  • Partial dentures replace one or several missing teeth, but not the entire “row” of upper or lower teeth. These dentures typically attach to neighboring teeth using special clips to keep them secure.
  • Full dentures replace an entire arch or row of missing teeth — either the top row or the bottom row. Some patients have full dentures to replace all their upper and lower teeth. These dentures are contoured to “hug” your gums, creating a gentle suction that helps keep them in place. Since your mouth shape can change over time, routine visits allow Dr. Rice to “re-fit” your dentures so they stay secure and comfortable.
  • Implant-secured dentures are full dentures that use implants to stay in place. For these dentures, Dr. Rice places two or more implant posts into your jaw. Your denture attaches to those posts, ensuring the denture stays in place. Some implant-secured dentures can be “snapped” in and out of your mouth for cleaning and convenience, while others (called “all-on-fours”) remain permanently attached, and can only be removed (if necessary) by your dentist.
